What is a Shroud in a Turbine?

A shroud is a critical component used in gas and steam turbines. It is typically located at the tip of turbine blades or around the blade assembly to improve operational efficiency, reduce vibration, and control leakage losses.

In high-speed rotating equipment like turbines, shrouds play an essential role in maintaining structural integrity and aerodynamic performance.

Types of Shrouds in Turbines:-

1️⃣ Blade Tip Shroud:

Blade tip shrouds are small extensions at the outer edge (tip) of turbine blades. When assembled, these shrouds interlock with adjacent blades to form a continuous ring.

Functions:

  • Reduces tip leakage of steam or gas
  • Improves turbine efficiency
  • Minimizes blade vibration
  • Enhances mechanical strength

Blade shrouds are commonly used in both steam and gas turbines across power plants and industrial applications.

 

2️⃣ Stationary / Casing Shroud:

Stationary shrouds are mounted on the turbine casing and surround the rotating blade assembly.

Functions:

  • Controls gas flow path
  • Maintains proper clearance
  • Protects casing from thermal damage

 

Why Shrouds Are Important in Turbines?

In high-temperature and high-pressure environments, even small efficiency losses can significantly impact turbine performance. Shrouds help:
